Under The Surface Project a Unique East Gippsland Tourism Mash Up

  Monday 18th July, 2022

The East Gippsland Rail Trail, and the amazing indigenous artists of Gunaikurnai Country, are two of this region’s fast-rising tourism drawcards.

So we love this project - Under The Surface - that combines the two into a compelling and powerful art experience set in the great outdoors.

Under the Surface is a curated public art project featuring local and internationally renowned artists' works, located along the existing East Gippsland Rail Trail.

Local indigenous artists Alice Pepper and Patricia Pittman were joined by visiting artists David “MEGGS” Hooke, Ling and Minna Leunig in solo and collaborative works in surprising locations along the rail-trail.

Under The Surface was designed and delivered by The Social Crew, in collaboration with Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation, East Gippsland Shire Council, and the East Gippsland Rail Trail Committee.

With the rail-trail becoming an increasingly important component of East Gippsland’s outdoor recreation offers, what a great idea it is to double-down on that asset with what will certainly make the experience even more “Instagrammable.”
